The Citi Strata Premier and Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select can both help travelers earn American Airlines AAdvantage miles, but they serve different needs. Strata Premier earns ThankYou points that can be transferred to AAdvantage at a 1:1 ratio, while Platinum Select earns AAdvantage miles directly and includes benefits for flying with American Airlines.
For earning rewards across a broad range of spending, Strata Premier is the stronger option. Its bonus categories currently earn more than Platinum Select’s in every category. That comparison is expected to change on Jan. 24, 2027, when Platinum Select adds higher rewards in select streaming services and eligible Rides and Rails purchases, including taxis, rideshares, subways and trains. Outside those categories, Strata Premier is likely to earn more overall for many cardholders.
Strata Premier also offers a $100 annual hotel benefit on a single stay of at least $500, excluding taxes and fees, booked through Citi Travel. Hotel bookings through the portal earn 10 ThankYou points per dollar. However, booking through a travel portal may mean missing out on hotel loyalty benefits available when reserving directly.
Its points can also be transferred to a range of airline and hotel programs, offering alternatives to American Airlines. Transfer ratios vary by partner and card. Points transferred from Strata Premier to AAdvantage do not earn American Airlines Loyalty Points.
Platinum Select is more appealing to travelers who value American Airlines-specific benefits. The card provides a free first checked bag on domestic American itineraries for the primary cardholder and up to four companions on the same reservation, as well as preferred boarding for the same group. Other current benefits include a 10% discount on eligible American Airlines Vacations packages, a 25% discount on inflight food and drinks, and a $125 flight discount after spending at least $20,000 during the card membership year and renewing.
Several Platinum Select benefits are scheduled to change on Jan. 24, 2027. The inflight discount will be replaced with up to $100 in annual statement credits for inflight purchases. The flight discount will rise to $150, with the same $20,000 spending requirement and renewal condition. The card is also set to add a complimentary annual Walmart+ membership, a credit of up to $120 toward a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee every four years, 50% off an annual FOX One subscription, and travel protections including trip delay, cancellation and interruption coverage, rental car insurance and lost baggage protection.
Platinum Select also offers up to $180 in annual statement credits on eligible Turo rentals, capped at $30 per eligible rental. Another distinction is its path toward AAdvantage elite status: cardholders earn one Loyalty Point for each eligible AAdvantage mile earned from purchases. American’s entry-level elite status requires 40,000 Loyalty Points.
The choice depends on how a traveler values flexibility versus airline benefits. Strata Premier is a better fit for those seeking rewards across everyday purchases and the option to transfer points among travel partners. Platinum Select is more suited to frequent American Airlines flyers who can use its travel perks or want eligible card spending to contribute toward elite status.
